What's the meaning of Starbucks?

"The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino." -Joe Fox, You've Got Mail

Starbucks is more than just coffee. To me, Starbucks means: free wifi, an office space, pretty music, rad art, low lighting, a peaceful atmosphere, friendly baristas, comfy chairs, therapy sessions with Lindsey, bible studies, toasted bagels, venti nonfat iced mochas, holiday spirit and meaningful conversations.

It's where I've participated in 'pay-it-forward' chains. It's where I most likely gained my share of freshman fifteen. It's where the cute Zac Efron/Chad Dylan Cooper look-alike worked down the street from my old house. In London, I learned it's where you're charged an extra 50p if you decide to dine in. It's where they used to sell toffee almond bars. {Side note: Why they ever stopped making these delicious treats is beyond me.} It's where 9 times out of 10, the baristas write 'Christine' on my cup instead of Kristyna (or Cristina or Christina). & It's where, from time to time, one receives a free cup of coffee if they mess up the order of the person in front of you.

Starbucks: Lovely. Magical. Remarkable. & I miss having one closer than forty miles away. What do you think of when you think of Starbucks? ★

  1. Oh, you are making me homesick for Starbucks;) I always used to go there when I travelled to the US, but I haven't been there in a while. The only one we have here(in Amsterdam) is at Central Station, so there goes your peace and quiet...

    Loved this post though<3

  2. I actually very rarely go to Starbucks since I'm really not a fan of coffee, but I have to admit that all of their drinks and food and everything do look rather delicious! And the smell coming out of that place is always so good, haha. Plus it's warm and has big comfy armchairs and such, which is always good.

  3. I hardly go because I find it so expensive, but it is yummy! I tried their peppermint mocha frappe the other day. My sister used to be a barista at a Joe Muggs and she made the best EVERYTHING and ever since then I am always disappointed everywhere I go, including Starbucks.

  4. lol that's cute about the indecisive people making 6 decisions. I used to go to Starbucks to study for my tests. It was such a great atmosphere & there are always cute guys behind the counters! =)

  11. Kristy,
I really like your writing style, and the quote from you've got mail paired with the pictures was great.

I usually tend to sway towards independent coffee shops, but one of the things I love about starbucks is that they give you permission to be as finicky as you want (with no judgment). We all have our high maintenance mornings.

  14. OMG I am so having a craving for a venti cafe latte double shot of espresso right now! I am nostalgic thinking of the many times my significant other and myself have frequented Starbucks just to peruse books while sipping our hot drink and gorging on a chocolate brownie!
